What if India conducts nuclear tests? This question has remained a grey area even though the Indo-US nuclear deal has been cleared by the US Senate. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is coming to New Delhi for a two-day visit on Saturday. Earlier it was reported that she would sign the 123 Agreement during her visit, but certain media reports now suggest that the 123 Agreement may not be ready for signing just yet, and will be signed in Washington next week. What is it that is now causing the delay? One thing is certain, that though the Nuclear Deal has been cleared by a thumping majority in the US Senate, some clauses remain unclear to the public as well politicians of our[..]

Many are the lies that have been told to you concerning nuclear power. As we say in Italian: “Lies have short legs” meaning that they cannot go far away, this is exactly the case of all the lies spread out in the past 20 years or so about nuclear power. It’s time to fight these lies without any mercy, the same way they were ruthlessly thrown to us. It’s common to think that nuclear energy is one of the cheapest energy sources available. This is the biggest lie ever, in fact if you count what it takes to produce 1 kW of electricity, it's not cheap at all. I won’t go very deep into the price details for now.  I only want you to consider what is needed to produce electricity from[..]

nuclear station

The UK is going through a transitional period in regards to their energy generation. Many of the old nuclear power stations are coming to the end of their lifespan and a drive to reduce the number of inefficient old coal power plants, nuclear energy is firmly established as an important part of the future energy production. The UK was one of the world leaders in domestic nuclear power, dating back to 1956 when the first nuclear power station was put into operation. At present, the number of nuclear power stations in the UK stands at 18, as some stations have already begun to close. Back in 1997, nuclear stations generated approximately 26% of the total electricity output in the UK.[..]

Depending upon which side of the fence you are sitting, the nuclear renaissance is either in full blossom or an arid landscape. The new uranium miners – Paladin Resources, UrAsia and SXR Uranium One – celebrate the record spot and long-term uranium price. Exelon Corp Chief Executive John Rowe is less sanguine, based upon comments he made this past Friday, “The government may have fooled me on 17 reactors that I currently run, but I’m the one who’s being foolish if I build a new plant without knowing what they’re going to do with the spent fuel.” Exelon is the largest owner of nuclear power plants in the United States. In a September 19th article, we[..]

nuclear job

The UK’s nuclear industry provides around 22% of the country’s electricity. Currently this sector employs around 50, 000 people, increasing demand will be put on the nuclear industry to satisfy growing energy demands, as well as to diversify the sources of energy we can utilize. Climate change has become an important issue within the nuclear and energy industries and embracing it has lead to the birth of a new generation of nuclear jobs and renewable energy jobs. With the rising demand for more ecologically sound implementations, it has been estimated that a further 9,000 engineers and scientists will be required to continue this progress in the UK alone. Nuclear jobs in this[..]

Nuclear Industry Set for New Boost

Government ministers have given the go-ahead to a series of new nuclear power plants that are designed to replace those that currently provide 20% of the nations electricity. Westinghouse, one of the three vendors involved in setting up the new power-plants, has estimated that the UKs economy could receive a boost worth around 30 million. In addition, there are likely to be thousands of new energy jobs created as part of the process. With soaring oil and gas prices, waning reserves of fossil fuel and pressure to tackle climate change, the decision to invest in nuclear power looks like a sensible one. All but one of the UKs nuclear power-plants is set to be phased[..]

Is Nuclear Power Safe?

The Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear power plant in Japan discharged approximately 350 gallons of radioactive water into the sea today after an earthquake shook the Japanese town, which is 160 miles northwest of Tokyo. Fortunately, the radioactive contamination levels fell well below legal limits. The power plant is the one largest nuclear facility's in the world and just one of fifty-five nuclear reactors in Japan. The incident, in light of the recent swarm of headlines regarding alternative energy use and the possible re-emergence of nuclear power as a primary alternative energy source, leaves many to wonder, is nuclear power safe? Nuclear energy has both good and bad points. It creates a[..]

Nuclear Waste Disposal

Posted by admin

Nuclear waste is currently reported as being kept in 126 temporary facilities scattered across 39 states, in cooling ponds and in storage buildings near nuclear reactors. Some of this waste sits on sites near rivers or on top of water tables, and some 160 to 170 million Americans live within 75 miles of one of these sites. Nuclear power stations and reprocessing plants release small quantities of radioactive gases (e.g, krypton-85 and xenon-133) and trace amounts of iodine-131 to the atmosphere. However, they have short half-lives, and the radioactivity in the emissions is diminished by delaying their release. Nuclear waste from NORM is not usually highly radioactive, and might be safe[..]

Nuclear waste generated from civilian nuclear activities and defense related nuclear weapon activities have made the disposal of nuclear wastea major issue of the present era. As the nuclear power grows and more and more experiments are done with nuclear power it has become inevitable to have a proper system to mange and monitor nuclear waste disposal. With more and more countries opting nuclear energy and radio active substances nuclear waste disposal has become a major concern. As nuclear waste is emitted from different sources the chances for health hazards is high if not disposed in a scientific manner. Radio active reactors, reprocessing of radioactive weapons, medical and[..]

Working with radioactive materials means that you want all of the very best in terms of shielding alternatives made available to you and your staff. There are several alternatives when it comes to radiation shielding, and the applications you choose will be determined by the type of activity occurring in your place of work. In most cases, several different shielding devices are used in tandem to offer maximum protection to those who could potentially be exposed to the harmful materials. Personal: Personal shielding gear is worn by the person manipulating or working near the radioactive material. All skin as well as the head should be protected in most scenarios that find a person in[..]

Egyptian authorities say they have arrested an engineer from the country's nuclear energy agency on charges of spying for Israel. The Egyptian government Tuesday announced that the engineer was arrested on February 18 for taking important documents from the Atomic Energy Agency. Authorities accuse the Egyptian worker of selling the documents to Israeli intelligence contacts for thousands of dollars. Egypt says an Irish man and a Japanese man are also wanted in connection with the case. Security officials say the Egyptian engineer and the foreign men had several meetings in Hong Kong. In a separate case, Egypt detained in January an Egyptian man with Canadian citizenship on charges of[..]
